No one wants to see Steve Carell's Michael Scott leave Dunder Mifflin, least of all the producers of The Office (NBC, Thursday, 9 p.m. ET). But at least those producers appear to be working overtime to soften the blow -- with a supersized, star-studded send-off episode that will air April 28 and run for an extra-special 50 minutes.
Specifics of the April 28 episode's plot aren't known, but one thing we're fairly certain of is this: It will end with Michael and lady love Holly (Amy Ryan) leaving Scranton for Colorado.
As for who will fill Steve Carell's shoes, Ricky Gervais, Will Arnett, Ray Romano, James Spader and British comedian Catherine Tate have all been tapped to appear in the show's May 19 season finale, with some of them reportedly playing applicants vying for Michael's job.
Will Ferrell, meanwhile, kicks off a four-episode arc on the show April 14, playing Michael's replacement, at least temporarily. While Ferrell has alluded to joining the show permanently, it's likely that he was just joking (hey, the guy's a comedian), seeing as he's a huge movie star and isn't slated to appear in the May 19 season ender (at least not to the public's knowledge).
As for Arnett and Spader, it doesn't sound like they're in the running for head honcho at Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch. Office writer Mindy Kaling, who plays Kelly Kapoor on the shwo, tweeted last month that Arnett would be playing the infamous Scranton Strangler, with Spader portraying his lawyer. While some commentators think she was just attempting to throw off the speculators, we think those roles suit Arnett and Spader just fine.
With all these famous faces showing up in the coming weeks, Michael's farewell might be just as sweet as it will be bitter. Hopefully. But however it all ends, one thing is certain: Michael's loss will be deeply felt. That's what she said!

The world seemed shocked last fall when Courteney Cox and David Arquette announced they were separating after eleven years of marriage. But one person who wasn't so surprised was their Scream 4 costar, Neve Campbell. "They were very professional during filming ... but I was somewhat aware of what they were dealing with," the actress says. And after going through her second divorce (from husband John Light) last summer, Campbell, 37, says she could definitely relate to what they were feeling.
iVillage caught up with the Scream queen -- who revisited the role of Sidney Prescott for the franchise's fourth film (which hits theaters April 15) -- about her plans for adoption, her fear of horror films and how she "fell in love" with Cox during filming.
It's been eleven years since the last Scream movie. Why did you wait so long to make another one?
At that time I just felt like we made a successful trilogy -- and I think that is pretty rare -- and we should probably not try to continue. Had we made another one back then people might not have been that interested. But I think because enough time has gone by, it feels nostalgic for people.
You were 23 when you made the first Scream movie. What advice do you wish you could give your 23-year-old self?
Relax! I would have wanted to understand that I should be less concerned with what people think. I think it’s hard at that age when so many people are giving strong opinions about who you are, and it’s hard not to get caught up in that and consider yourself not appealing to people. I think we all go through that whether you’re a celebrity or not, so that was a tough one for me. I would’ve loved to been able to worry a little bit less.
Do you like watching scary movies?
I used to hate horror films. I saw The Changeling when I was 13 -- the one with George C. Scott, not Angelina Jolie -- and it scared me so much and I never saw a horror film after that. Even during Scream I hadn’t seen any. Jada Pinkett Smith actually heard that I hadn’t seen any of (director Wes Craven's) films on the second one. She got really angry at me and got me a bunch of his films, so we watched them. They can be great fun, and I do enjoy them if I’m with a group of people ... but I can’t do them on my own.
Did you guys ever try to scare each other on set?
J.P. Jones, who is our prop guy and has been doing our props for 15 years, took it upon himself to try and scare each and every one of us during the film at some point. He would do things like hide in the closets. So, say if I had to open a door and there wasn’t supposed to be anyone behind there, he would jump out in Ghostface’s costume and with a knife. Very unexpected, obviously.
How was it working with Courtney Cox and David Arquette again?
It was great! I love those two. I think they know these roles really well, they’re brilliant at them, and they’re very funny people. Courteney and I actually got to know each other better on this film. We hadn't had enough time on the last film to get to know each other properly, and we just sort of fell in love with each other. She’s a fantastic woman, really hilarious and wise and sweet and really good. David’s quirky and wonderful, and I adore them both. So it was nice working with them.
Were you surprised when you found out they were separating?
I wasn’t surprised. I was aware a little bit of what was going on. They were very professional during the film and weren’t talking about it or making an issue of it, but I was somewhat aware of what they were dealing with. And, you know, it’s sad. They adore each other, they love each other very much, and it’s always sad when a relationship has to end. But I think they’re being really graceful about it in the way that they’re going through it and doing their best and caring for each other. And they love (their daughter) Coco to death. It’s a tough thing, especially to go through in public, but I think they’re handling it well.
You got divorced last year. Did you relate to what they were going through?
Yeah, anyone who’s been through any kind of separation can relate.
What's it like being single again? Are you seeing anyone?
I’ve been doing some dating.
I’ve read before that you plan on adopting some day. Is that still in the cards?
Yeah, definitely. It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid for some reason. Both my brother and I have wanted to adopt children.
You've also said you think the media puts too much emphasis on celebrities’ weight and physical appearance. Do you feel pressure to look perfect?
Yeah, of course there’s pressure to look a certain way, especially in this industry. Unfortunately, there's a standard that seems to have been set, and there seems to be a lot of size 0s around, and I can’t ever do that. That’s not who I am, and I would have to get myself really sick to be able to get to that point ... it’s not natural for me. It makes me sad when I see some people not eating and not taking care of themselves. I hope there comes a shift and people start to realize there are other things in the world that are far more important than our appearance.
There’s been talk about a possible Party of Five reunion lately. Is that something you'd do?
I have no idea where that came from! I love that show, and I love those guys. I’m still great friends with Lacey (Chabert) and Matt (Fox) and Scott (Wolf), and I adore them to death. But I’m not sure it would make sense for any of us to do (a reunion). I think we managed to make a great show, and we should probably leave it at that.
What about another Scream movie? Do you think there will be a Scream 5?
I can’t say whether I’d be a part of it because that would tell the audience whether or not I make it through the fourth one! But I would imagine that if this film does well then, whether I’m in it or not, that (executive producer) Bob Weinstein would probably want to make one.
Have you ever had a strange encounter with a fan?
I remember once someone asked me for an autograph while I was in a public toilet ... while I was peeing. They were knocking on the door and asking me for an autograph and putting the paper under the door -- and I thought that was kind of an odd experience.
That’s a little aggressive! So did you sign the autograph?
Yeah, after I peed and washed my hands!
